Digital Transformation and The State of Manufacturing

In March 2021, Industry Week collected and analysed data on behalf of Dassault Systemes to dive into the digital transformation of manufacturing businesses.

The research was conducted across businesses from the various stages of digital transformation, from the early stage, through the mid-stage, advanced stage and mature stage.

By looking at businesses at each of these stages it was possible to see how different applications, processes and metrics impact their respective operations.

Check out our range of infographics below which we’ve created to highlight some of the key points that were discovered in the research report.

If you’d like to check out the full report, you can view it here.

Dassault discovered that only 2% of businesses responding to the survey were achieving end-to-end visibility throughout their manufacturing operation.

It appears from the data that the majority of manufacturers are looking at digital document management as their initial steps along the transformation journey.

Cloud computing and business analytics are the second and third most popular categories for those on the mid / advanced stages of transformation.

3-Technology-Used-Digital-Transformation

ERP systems are the primary ‘enablers’ of that digital transformation with other applications coming ‘into play’ such as quality management and MES systems.

It is worth noting at this point, that DELMIAWorks does provide a fully integrated manufacturing platform which includes ERP, quality, inventory, WMS and MES etc. in one complete package.

4-Essential-Applications

The report noted eight key business metrics that manufacturers are using to measure performance. Top of the list is ‘on time delivery’ followed by quality / defects and rework.

Unsurprisingly, production metrics comes in third with inventory levels fourth.

5-Business-Metrics

What about the drivers behind the decision to invest in manufacturing software and technology? Again, the report splits out the more mature vs. the recent starters on the transformation journey with 60% of the mature ‘transformers’ citing growth and profitability as the primary driver.

For the early stage adopters, changes in customer demands is the primary driver.
